Our Place: Lake Tekapo, New Zealand

The top spot in New Zealand to get married

Situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo is the Church of the Good Shepherd, which, in 1935, was the first church built in the Mackenzie Basin.  This beautiful church is arguably one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames stunning views of the lake and mountains beyond.

The Mackenzie Basin (popularly and traditionally known as the Mackenzie Country), located in South Canterbury's "High Country", is near the geographical centre of the South Island of New Zealand.

The lake's turquoise colour is created by glacial rock suspended in the lake water.  The grinding of rocks by the ice of the glaciers creates fine ‘flour’ that is then carried down from the Alps by rivers into Lake Tekapo.

Lake Tekapo is the second largest of three lakes in the Mackenzie Country and the famed turquoise water is a welcoming sight at the foot of the majestic Southern Alps.  It is only 3 hours drive from Queenstown or Christchurch, and an easy hour’s drive to New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki Mount Cook.

The region also offers extensive activities including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, water sports, skiing, horse trekking, scenic flights, hot pools and stargazing.

As day becomes night, Lake Tekapo offers the chance to appreciate some of the clearest, darkest and star-friendly skies on earth. Lake Tekapo must certainly be one of the most romantic & pristine places on earth to celebrate a special occasion with the one you love.
